- Same line, different numbers. You will need to call the phone company
- to get another phone number assigned to that line with the multi-ring
- service (with an additional charge for that number per month. If
- memory serves me correct a multi-ring number is automatically
- unlisted/unpublished).
-
- ie: 555-1212 (ring) --> data
- 555-1314 (ring-ring) --> fax
- 555-2435 (ring ring-ring) --> modem
- (I made up the 555 numbers :-)
-
- Somethings to consider before jumping. If you simply want the incoming
- ability for FAX then you may not need another multi-ring [number].
- Most fax machines will answer the line (say on 2 rings) and if it
- doesn't see the "beep" will ring over to the answering machine or real
- phone.
-
- Or you could get a fax/voice switch which would go on with the
- answering machine. The answering machine would answer (or you :-) and
- if the "beep" comes over the wire from the calling fax then the switch
- takes over and routes it to the fax machine.
-
- Now, remote access of the PC would require a multi-ring with a
- multi-ring box or multi-ring aware devices.
-
- I don't fax from home (incoming) but do extensively access my computer
- remotely (almost soley). I have the phone setup like this: RING is for
- data (and is my "real" number, more on this shortly). RING-RING is my
- unlisted/unpublished voice number (on the same line). The modem is set
- to look for and answer only RING (it will IGNORE RING-RING) on two
- rings. The answering machine answers on four rings. Now if the
- computer hangs and doesn't answer the RING the answering machine
- (being a 'dumb device') will answer that call too on four rings...
- (only draw back and rarely, if ever happens).
-
- Why RING-RING for my voice? Caller-ID. My [voice] number is only given
- to co-workers, friends, family, etc. I get **NO** solicitations on
- that "line". Ever. When I pick up the phone and call someone their
- caller-id shows my "RING" (data) number -- always. I get many, many
- calls on that "line" (number) for solicitations (I assume -- there are
- a lot of hangups :-). All they get is a computer screeming in their ear.
- Essentially I have a number at which I can be reached at but can not
- be captured, "traced", etc... No interruptions at the dinner table. Ever.
-
- It did take about a week to get used to ignoring a "RING'ing" phone
- (only two rings -- and it is on two rings to answer to capture the
- caller ID info on my end :-). A "RING-RING'ing" is for me, not my
- computer (and others do tie into my computer as well...).
